Prospective Healthcare Decision-Making By Combined System Dynamics, Discrete-Event And Agent-Based Simulation Anatoli Djanatliev, Reinhard German, Proceedings of the 2013 Winter Simulation Conference

Prospective Health Technology Assessment allows early decision making for innovative health care technologies. In our recent publications a hybrid simulation approach with System Dynamics and Agent-Based Modeling has been presented. This paper presents a mechanism to generate agents dynamically from SD models and extends the previously presented hybrid approach by process-oriented Discrete Event Simulation for hospital modeling.

RoPax/RoRo: Exploring the Use of Simulation as Decision Support System Mariusz Balaban and Tom Mastaglio

Several challenges of port/terminal and/or ferry company managers pertain to decisions for the justification of investments and concurrent operational tasks of roll-on/roll-off passenger (RoPax) and roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) systems. This paper explores the possible uses of Modeling and Simulation (M&S) techniques as a decision-support aid for a RoPax/RoRo system managers.

Agent-based modelling to visualise trustworthiness: a socio-technical framework Shuyuan Mary Ho, Ram Reddy Katukoori; Int. J. Mobile Network Design and Innovation, Vol. 5, No. 1, 2013

This paper describes a socio-technical study based on physical world scenarios of deceptive behaviour occurring in a virtual collaborative environment. An agent-based modelling (ABM) approach was adopted to visualise trustworthiness that can signal deceptive behaviour in virtual communications among social actors. The modelling strategies were guided by attribution theories toward an agent’s perceived trustworthiness.

Large Scale Healthcare Modeling by Hybrid Simulation Techniques using AnyLogic Anatoli Djanatliev and Reinhard German, Computer Networks and Communication Systems Department of Computer Science 7. Proceedings of the 6th International ICST Conference on Simulation Tools and Techniques

This paper describes a methodical and practical approach of hybrid model creation using the simulation tool AnyLogic. We focus on general modeling aspects and on advanced techniques using a Level-Based Architecture that help to develop large scale hybrid simulation models. An implementation of a stroke therapy use-case and its simulation results will be discussed. Finally, some practical ideas for validation will be outlined, as we experienced during the stroke use-case development.

Business Process Modeling and Efficiency Improvement through an Agent-Based Approach Dario RUSSO, Franco PASSACANTANDO, Luigi GEPPERT, Luigi MANCA

This paper describes the results of a practical experience of business process improvement and change. the business modeling approach, carried out through an agent-based model, has been applied to an operational process with the aim to reduce the overlapping of the operational phases and to improve the time-efficiency. Simulation outcomes and results are discussed.

Modeling Smart Grids as Complex Systems Through The Implementation of Intelligent Hubs Jose Gonzalez de Durana, Oscar Barambones (University College of Engineering, University of the Basque Country); Enrique Kremers, Pablo Viejo (European Institute for Energy Research - EIFER). 7th International Conference on Informatics in Control, Automation and Robotics (ICINCO), Funchal, Madeira (Portugal), June 15-18 2010.

The electrical system is undergoing a profound change of state, which will lead to what is being called the smart grid. The necessity of a complex system approach to cope with ongoing changes is presented: combining a systemic approach based on complexity science with the classical views of electrical grids is important for an understanding the behavior of the future grid. Key issues like different layers and inter-layer devices, as well as subsystems are discussed and proposed as a base to create an agent-based system model to run simulations.

Object oriented simulation of Hybrid Renewable Energy systems focused on Supervisor Control Jose Maria Gonzalez de Durana, Oscar Barambones (Universidad del Pais Vasco). IEEE Int. Conf. on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation Proceedings of the IEEE Int. Conf. on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, Palma de Mallorca, 22/09/2009

With eyes focused on simulation the authors review some of the main topics of Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HRES). Then they describe an Object Oriented model of a simple example of one of such systems, a micro-grid, oriented to designing a decentralized Supervisor Control. The model has been implemented using AnyLogic.

A Complex Systems Modelling Approach for Decentralized Simulation of Electrical Microgrids Enrique Kremers and Pablo Viejo (European Institute for Energy Research - EIFER EDF and the University of Karlsruhe); Oscar Barambones and Jose Gonzalez de Durana (University College of Engineering University of the Basque Country). Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS), 2010 15th IEEE International Conference on, 22-26 March 2010.

The structure and behavior of Electrical Grids share many of the properties of Complex Computer Systems, with microgrids and other decentralized electrical systems attached to them, so they can be interpreted as Systems of Systems. Furthermore, the evolution of the future electrical system will bring a higher degree of decentralization concerning specially production and control. To deal with this paradigm change, new models and tools are necessary. In this paper a model of an electrical microgrid is presented.

A Generic Operational Simulation for Early Design Civil Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Benjamin Schumann, Jim Scanlan (School of Engineering Sciences University of Southampton); Kenji Takeda (Microsoft Research). Proceedings of the SIMUL 2011: The Third International Conference on Advances in System Simulation

Contemporary aerospace programmes often suffer from large cost overruns, delivery delays and inferior product quality. This is caused in part by poor predictive quality of the early design phase processes with regards to the operational environment of a product. This paper develops the idea of a generic operational simulation that can help designers to rigorously analyse and test their early product concepts. The simulation focusses on civil Unmanned Air Vehicle products and missions to keep the scope of work tractable.
